Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder are serial provokers. They are experts at seeking out flexible, easy-going people. They exploit this quality by constantly provoking their targets with covert jabs, minimization, veiled humor, and patronization. The target will try to remain calm and pleasant to keep the peace.
But the narcissist will continue to provoke the target until they finally snap. When this happens, they will sit back, feign surprise, and marvel at how angry, passive-aggressive, and unstable the target is.
